Understanding MeRT for Autism
What is MeRT treatment?
MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is a noninvasive treatment that uses EEG brain mapping and gentle magnetic stimulation to encourage healthier brain activity. Each treatment plan is personalized based on a patient’s unique brain patterns.
How does MeRT differ from TMS?
Unlike standard TMS, which employs a “one-size-fits-all” approach, MeRT is customized to each individual’s unique brain activity. We use EEG and EKG testing to create a personalized treatment protocol.
Is MeRT safe for children with autism?
Yes. MeRT is a well-tolerated, drug-free, and noninvasive therapy. It has been used safely with children, teens, and adults.
Is there a minimum age for MeRT treatment?
We determine eligibility individually. After an evaluation, the clinical team will assess your child’s development, medical history, and EEG results to determine if MeRT is appropriate.
Autism Treatment Process
What happens during the initial evaluation?
The process begins with a qEEG and EKG to assess brainwave and heart patterns. Based on this information, the clinic creates a customized treatment plan.
How long does a typical treatment plan last?
Treatment usually spans 4 to 6 weeks, with sessions five days a week. Each session typically lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.
What does the treatment feel like?
During a session, the patient may feel a light tapping sensation on the scalp. The treatment is gentle, painless, and well-tolerated by most children.
Can I stay with my child during sessions?
Yes, we encourage parents to stay in the room during treatment. We want your child to feel safe and supported.
Can MeRT work alongside other therapies?
Absolutely. Parents often combine MeRT with other therapies, such as ABA, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, to support broader progress.
What to Expect
When might we see improvements?
Every patient responds differently, but many families notice changes within a few weeks of starting treatment. Improvements may include better sleep, increased focus, calmer behavior, or more communication.
What kinds of improvements have been reported?
Families often report gains in language skills, emotional regulation, social connection, daily routines, and overall engagement with their surroundings.
Are the effects of MeRT permanent?
MeRT aims to promote long-term improvements in brain function. Some people may benefit from occasional maintenance sessions as they grow or encounter new challenges.
What happens if we can’t complete the entire treatment program?
If circumstances change, the clinical team will work with you to adjust the plan based on the progress already made.
Cost & Insurance
Does insurance cover MeRT for autism?
Currently, MeRT treatment for autism is not covered by insurance. However, we can provide CPT codes and a billing breakdown you may submit to your insurance.
For conditions other than Major Depressive Disorder and OCD (which are FDA-cleared), insurance rarely reimburses any of the costs associated with treatment.
What is the cost for MeRT treatment?
The cost can vary depending on the clinic, your child’s specific needs, and the length of the treatment program. After the initial evaluation, the clinic will provide you with a detailed cost estimate.
What forms of payment are accepted?
Most clinics accept major credit cards, and some may also accept CareCredit. Payment policies can vary slightly by location, and we’ll help you find the clinic that best meets your needs.
